Can we trust our eyes? In this optics textbook for preservice teachers, optical phenomena are developed step by step, starting from observation, simple experimentation, and careful description: reflections and shadows, colors and refraction, diffraction and polarization. Throughout, perceptual capacity is consistently considered as an integral part of the approach. Concepts and interpretations are systematically grounded in what is observed and serve to structure and communicate understanding of the phenomena. Thus it is not the model that comes first, but the phenomenon itself. Models of light are introduced as experience rich descriptions and are accompanied by ongoing reflection, for example with regard to what they explain, what they simplify, and the domain in which they are valid.

How do shadows form? Why do seashells produce a rushing sound? And why does a tanker made of iron not sink? Science education at primary level thrives on intriguing questions and the search for their answers. But what do experiments look like that introduce children to the phenomena of their everyday world in an experiential, hands-on, and intellectually challenging way? How must teaching concepts be designed—both in content and materials—so that children can understand their environment and grasp it with all their senses? The Grund-SchulPOOL project was initiated to improve science and technology education in primary schools.
